Personal Statement

My name is Carrie McGaha, and I am a senior at NC State University majoring in Communication. My interest in communication, writing, and media dates back to my freshman year at NC State University. When I began my undergraduate career, I chose to concentrate in public relations. Through my coursework, I have learned to conduct research on target populations, worked with a group to create a public relations campaign proposal for a local nonprofit organization, and created this blog.

My school and internship experiences have allowed me to hone my writing skills and become comfortable making presentations. I am familiar with various social networking and blogging sites and their importance in disseminating information. At my current internship with North Carolina State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS), I created a Facebook page for the college that informs more than 500 fans of upcoming news and events.

COM 267, Electronic Media Writing: Theory and Practice, has helped me understand the process of writing for a variety of electronic media and apply that knowledge to various media projects. Through the course, I now know the role of the writer in the production process. The practice aspect of the course helped me understand and create various types of media, such as, a blog, audio/visual project, and a podcast.

While public relations professionals usually spend their time writing press releases and copy material for websites, I think COM 267 has made me more competitive in the job market.  I can use the skills I have acquired through the class to market myself as an essential asset to any organization.  I have already used some of the Blogger technical skills I learned in class, like adding a like button, to my current communications internship. After college, I hope to work with a nonprofit.  These organizations are known for hiring one person to do the work of several.  The audio, visual, and blogging skills I gained in class will help me fulfill whatever role an organization needs.
